Character creation by the numbers

Type a name. Nine Gematria ciphers turn its letters into numbers, and those numbers decide everything: race, looks, clothing, the item in their hand. Then find a match, merge, and evolve.

Try your own name, or someone you know. Every name always makes the same character.

The game

What is Cipher Evolution?

Cipher Evolution is a character generating and breeding game built on the power of Gematria. The characteristics of every character come from the calculated values of nine Gematria ciphers, worked out from the name that is entered.

New characters arrive through the Character Generator, or are born when two willing characters merge their values to create a child. The more characters people bring to life, the more matches there are, and the larger the families grow.

Every lineage is recorded, so family trees can be drawn and searched.

What is Gematria?

Gematria is an alphanumeric code that gives a number to a name, word or phrase according to its letters. A single word can yield several values depending on the cipher used.

Originally developed for the Hebrew language, its principle has been carried over to Greek, English and other languages. Gematria is said to be the method by which the world was spoken into existence, and we are doing the same here with the Cipher Evolution world.

How does it work?

From a name to a family tree

1

Enter a name

Nine ciphers calculate nine values from its letters. Those values set the gender, race, hair, skin, body, eyes, height, clothing and item.

2

Find a match

Characters are matched with others through correspondences between their values, then brought together side by side to compare.

3

Merge in the chamber

If both are willing they step into the Evolution Chamber (don't worry, it's totally young viewer friendly) and merge to create a child.

4

Name the child

A name from the Pool of Available Names is assigned to the child, chosen by the values calculated at their birth.

But who keeps the child?

The Custody Battle

Each parent decides whether to fight for custody. If only one fights, that parent takes the child home. If both fight, the Custody Algorithm weighs each parent's Gematria values against the child's, and the higher Custody Value wins.

If a parent does not like the name, both can agree to switch it for another corresponding name from the pool.

And if neither parent wants the child, it is not born, and its name goes back into the pool.

Enter the Evolution Chamber

"Characteristics of characters are based on generated values of the Gematria ciphers, which are calculated based on the name of the character entered."

The first characters

The original concept art imagined a human warrior, a pixie with a mystical staff, a cyborg, a reptilian with a battle axe, a feline gentleman and a canine lady. Their names were found by searching the numbers: each of these six makes exactly that character, built live from its nine cipher values.
